FAQs

What is ChildLine?

Since it was launched in 1986, ChildLine has saved children's lives, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no one else cared for them. ChildLine has now counselled nearly two million children and young people.

Around 1,400 volunteers provide a counselling service under the supervision of professional supervisors and managers. Every day thousands of children gain comfort, advice and support from ChildLine counsellors. But, there are thousands more who are asked to wait in a queue until a counsellor becomes free.

In February 2006, ChildLine and the NSPCC formally joined forces to help, support and protect even more children and move closer towards our goal of supporting every young person that turns to us for support.

What do children call about?

Children can call ChildLine about any problem or concern, but the most common problems are abuse (both sexual and physical), bullying, serious family tensions, worries about friends` welfare and teenage pregnancy.

What else does ChildLine do?

ChildLine campaigns on behalf of children by relaying what they tell us to policy-makers who can help change children`s lives for the better. Find out how you can join the NSPCC and ChildLine`s campaign to end cruelty to children.

ChildLine produces a wide range of publications on the key topics affecting children and young people. These publications are aimed at children and young people, parents and carers, childcare professionals, teachers, and the general public. Download ChildLine publications for free.

ChildLine also provides an outreach service to schools and youth groups through its CHIPS (ChildLine in partnerships) programme. CHIPS provide a range of services that help to tackle common issues that affect children and young people. It helps organisations to set up schemes to tackle bullying that encourage young people to support one another and to develop practical skills such as communication, listening, understanding and administration.

Acknowledgements

Gringtones was launched to raise funds for the ChildLine service, enabling more children to access the helpline and get the support they desperately need. The gringtones website, gringtones artwork, advertising and the support of celebrities were all gifted to ChildLine. We would like to thank everyone involved for giving up their time, resources and expertise for free and enabling us to raise funds for the thousands of children who turn to ChildLine for support every day.
